Co-op City is a New York State Mitchell-Lama housing cooperative in the northeast Bronx with 15,372 residential units in 35 high-rise buildings and seven (7) townhouse clusters consisting of garden and duplex apartments. It is the largest single residential development in the United States with a population of approximately 50,000 residents and its own zip code, 10475. Built on 320 acres of property, only 20 percent of the land is developed, leaving a majority of the community's natural beauty undisturbed and lots of green spaces in a serene, park-like environment.
Life in Co-op City revolves around cooperative living. The development has many conveniences on-site for shareholders. There are shopping centers, community centers with meeting rooms, parking garages, playgrounds, professional offices, shopping and dining options, senior services, a public library, fire house and an education park with nursery through high school levels, most within walking distance.
Co-op City has its own tri-generation power plant which provides the development's electricity, heat, hot water and air conditioning, amenities that are included in owners' monthly maintenance changes, as well as its own garbage pick-up, Public Safety department and 53-year old community newspaper, the Co-op City Times.
Co-op City is accessible to all points of the city by public transportation, including an express bus to Manhattan. A Metro-North railroad station is also planned for Co-op City pending completion of the Penn Station Access Project.
Riverbay Corporation is the corporate entity of Co-op City. The development is governed by a 15-member resident Board of Directors that sets policy for the community. Any shareholder of record who meets criteria outlined in the annual Riverbay Board of Directors’ Election Rules & Regulations has a right to run for and be elected to the Riverbay Board of Directors, to elect directors and to participate in the annual shareholders meeting. Co-op City is managed by Douglas Elliman Property Management.
Riverbay Residential Sales Department is the exclusive agent for all apartment sales in Co-op City. Subletting is prohibited.
