Mission

The Department of Public Safety’s mission is to provide the highest level of professional service. We provide emergency response service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By employing our core values of professional conduct, integrity, respect, and service we continue to work with community partners to maintain a safe community and to achieve the highest possible quality of life for cooperators, commercial tenants, and visitors.

Geographical Area of Responsibility

Co-op City is the world’s largest affordable co-op housing complex situated on 320 acres in the northeast Bronx. The property houses thirty-five high-rise buildings and seven townhouse clusters consisting of 15,372 residential units and is home to approximately 50,000 resident shareholders. There are also three shopping centers with commercial and professional tenants, two educational campuses and eight parking garages.

Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety has three main branches:

Co-op City Police Department - Sworn New York City and State certified Peace Officers.
Lobby Attendants-Provide added level of security and service in high rise buildings.
Dispatchers- Staff an on-site, 24-hour emergency call center to receive and dispatch public safety officers. Dispatchers also interact with callers and provide information to those in need of assistance.

Powers of Enforcement and Certifications

Co-op City officers are authorized to possess and carry firearms. They possess arrest authority. These legally bestowed Peace Officer powers are granted by the New York State Criminal Procedure law and New York City Special Patrolman’s Act, which is contained in the City of New York Administrative Code. Additionally, Rules and procedures for Special Patrolmen are authorized by the Police Commissioner of the City of New York.

All officers are State Certified Peace Officers and complete a rigorous training curriculum mandated and approved by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Additionally, each officer undergoes annual firearms requalification. All public safety members receive special training designed to support delivery of the best possible service to the community. Our Emergency Service Officers are all certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s). The Department of Public Safety maintains an in-house training academy

Department

POLICE DEPARTMENT UNITS

The Co-op City Police Department is made up of specific units:

Patrol Services Unit, provides 24 hour coverage
Detective Unit
Emergency Services Unit provides 24 hour coverage
Training Unit

Additional Units are deployed as needed to provide special service to the community including bicycle patrol, foot patrol, community affairs, and plain clothes patrol. The implementation of a community based CPOP (Community Police Officer Program) or NCO (Neighborhood Coordination Officer) units are being studied and may be implemented in the future.

LOBBY ATTENDANTS

Trained Public Safety staff who are assigned to staff the 65 distinct lobbies of our 35 high rise buildings. Lobby Attendants receive special training. They maintain a vital link to all residents and visitors in our high rise buildings. Lobby Attendants welcome and assist those entering each high rise building. They monitor conditions and serve as vital Co-op City team members working in collaboration to improve the quality of life of cooperators.

DISPATCHERS

The Department of Public Safety maintains an onsite public safety answering and dispatch center. Trained members respond to calls for service 24 hours a day. They receive emergency and non-emergency calls directly from the public and dispatch officers as required to assist community members in need. They are one of public safety’s point of first contact assets serving the community. Dispatchers are an important part of the team that maintains the various alarm and emergency notification systems throughout the Co-op City campus. They are a vital link with our main public safety partners the New York City Fire Department and the New York City Police Department.

R U OK
R U OK is a FREE telephone reassurance program offered by the Co-op City Department of Public Safety. The program provides a way to check on the well being of senior citizens and homebound residents of Co-op City that may require assistance, or who might face medical emergencies alone at their home.

Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention Tips

1. Never open your door to anyone you do not know. Ask repair, delivery people and utility providers such as your cable repair technician to show identification. All Riverbay employees carry identification while on duty. Even if you are expecting someone, ask who it is before opening your door. If you have any doubt, call 9-1-1 or the Department of Public Safety at 1 (718) 671-3050.

2. If you see suspicious persons or hear suspicious noise coming from your neighbor’s apartment, a burglary could be taking place, notify CCPD and 911. Townhouse residents should also be vigilant for persons loitering about the townhouse areas. Try to get to know your neighbors so you can be alert to any unusual changes in their routine. Be alert to any suspicious activity. Call 911 and the Department of Public Safety at (718) 671-3050. Callers may remain anonymous when giving information.

3. Refrain from posting vacation photos on social media while away on vacation as this can signal to burglars you are not home. Make sure your privacy settings exclude anyone other than your friends from viewing your photographs. This holds true for the social media sites of everyone in your household.

4. Install good pick-proof locks and use them whenever you leave the house or go to sleep. Riverbay Corporation provides only bottom lock access. A good quality top lock with a safety plate is highly recommended. Always change your locks if you lose your keys. Never leave keys in “hiding” spots. When using valet service, separate your car keys and never place identifying information on keys.

We continue to maintain strong working relationships with our law enforcement, and public safety partners.
